Successful Showcase Event for Older People held in Ashbourne

The Meath Age Friendly Alliance held a successful showcase event in the Pillo Hotel, Ashbourne, on Tuesday.

The ‘Meath Cares About Older People’ event highlighted the wide range of services and supports available for older people throughout the county.

The event, an initiative by the Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Sharon Tolan, recognises the importance of reaching out to older members of the community to ensure they are aware of the many resources that can provide assistance and improve their quality of life.

“I’ve spoken to many older people across Meath who experience isolation or find it difficult to access essential services, particularly those living in rural areas,” said Cllr Tolan.

“This event is about showcasing all the supports and opportunities available to older people in our county, from arts and sports to community development and volunteering. Meath has so much to offer, and this is a chance to highlight what’s right here on our doorstep.”

The event at the Pillo Hotel featured informative exhibition stands, engaging demonstrations, and a series of talks on topics such as eye and ear health, information on wills, and local services.

The Meath Age Friendly Alliance is an interagency group dedicated to advancing the Meath Age Friendly Programme, which supports the development of age-friendly communities across the county. This initiative aligns with the World Health Organisation’s global framework for Age Friendly Cities and Communities, emphasizing the importance of creating environments that support healthy and active aging.

Valerie Mc Hugh, Age Friendly Programme Manager with Meath County Council, highlighted the strength of the local Age Friendly Alliance, “We’re fortunate to have a dedicated group of individuals and organisations committed to making meaningful changes for the benefit of our older residents. We also have an active Older Person’s Council, where older people can engage directly with agencies and help shape the services they receive.

"We’re always looking for new members to the wider Older Person’s Council, and anyone interested can register their interest by contacting Meath County Council, call 046 9097000 .”

Meath County Council also hosts the Age Friendly Shared Service, a national office that supports all 31 local authorities in delivering their Age Friendly Programmes.
