The Ladies Club at South Meath Golf Club in Trim celebrated its 25th anniversary recently by combining the milestone with their Past Captain’s Competition, as they welcomed those who have served in the position of lady captain throughout the lifetime of the club.

South Meath Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course on the Longwood Road. Designed by Eddie Hackett, the course was founded in 1993 by the late Jody Keegan and his wife, Gabrielle, on the site of the farm where Jody grew up.

South Meath Ladies Club have a small membership but this is certainly their unique selling point as many visitors to the club have commented on the friendly, homely atmosphere provided by the members.

Their club runs weekly competitions and they have just completed a very busy summer season which saw them participating in the Irish Mixed Foursomes, The North Leinster Mixed Foursomes, The AIG Women’s Minor Foursomes, The AIG Women’s Challenge Trophy, The 3Ts Competition, and winning The Grainne Óg Trophy in Moate.

Because of the small membership in the club, ladies may have several roles to play during the year, as well as serving on the committee one may have to manage one of the team events or perhaps assist running a fundraiser. It is this closeness and the camaraderie of the club which has made it so enjoyable for the members. That having been said the ladies would certainly love to welcome new members.

“We are an aging club and we are very aware that we need to develop our club membership further,” states current lady captain, Liz Blake. It was this thought process which led the current committee to put plans in place to run a Get Women into Golf programme in 2025. The ladies plan to give a series of presentations to local groups in order to enlist interested participants.

On Saturday 2nd November, the ladies met before golf for tea/coffee and scones then played the Past Captain’s Competition, followed by hot food in the clubhouse. Later Lady Captain Liz Blake cut the 25th anniversary cake, followed by a prizegiving and then a special presentation to founder members Brigid Guy and Nora Duffy.

South Meath Ladies Club welcome ladies of all abilities to the game. If you are interested in joining please contact the club at (046) 9431471. If you are completely new to the game, look out for the Get Women into Golf programme which will commence in 2025.
