Hundreds turnout to honour Rita & Robbie

While some were still sleeping off the excess of Christmas and St Stephen's Day dinners just shy of 400 runners took to the start line for the annual Rita & Robbie 5k from Claremont Stadium Navan on 27th December.

The formalities of the race saw Tallaght AC's Thomas Fitzpatrick win the race in 15 minutes, 20 seconds, just two seconds ahead of Dunleer AC's Matthew Fitzpatrick. Marcus Clarke from Ratoath AC was the leading Meath athlete home in seventh place.

The women's race went to Crusaders AC's Saoirse McGrath in 18:27 with Dunboyne AC's Eimear English second in 18:32.

The team race was won by Tara Ac with Eoin O'Connell, Paul O'Donnell and Declan Fahy doing the scoring. Dunboyne AC's team of Matthew Moffat, James Padden and Eimear English were second with Na Fianna AC's Peter Mooney, Stephen Holland and Joe Bannon in third.

The Rita & Robbie Christmas 5k honours the memories of two founding members of Navan AC, Rita Brady and Robbie Byrne.

Rita Brady was the club’s founding secretary who served the club diligently for over 40 years. Robbie Byrne was a local hairdresser and original club member who was the first president of Meath Athletics.
