Spur road would ‘eliminate a lot of dangerous traffic’ on the Borallion
The need for a spur road from the Borallion in Navan to the M3 motorway has been highlighted by a lorry driver who regularly uses that road, who says it would eliminate a lot of dangerous traffic build up at either end of the Borallion.
Cattle dealer, Jim Corcoran says vehicles approaching Navan from the Trim direction looking to access the motorway, face difficult manoeuvres turning onto the Borallion before meeting traffic build up at the junction with the Kilmessan Road and then descending to the junction at the Willows before turning back to access the motorway.
"These are dangerous manoeuvres for trucks."
Jim who is based in Moynalvey said he regularly passes through Navan heading to Carnaross.
"There are a lot of truck drivers heading north from the Trim direction that have to access the motorway via the Borallion. It would make sense to have a spur to the motorway. It would be safer and it would cut out a lot of the backlog of traffic. It wouldn't affect revenue from tolls as they would be paying the toll between Navan and Kells.
"I always think when I am driving over the motorway on the way into Navan from Trim, if only I could get onto it more easily.
"I see a lot of trucks turning off the Trim Road onto the Borallion and a lot of them coming back. A spur road would make things so much easier," he said.
At a recent meeting of Navan Municipal Council, the Mayor, Cllr Eddie Fennessy asked for an update on the proposed development of a spur/link road from the Borallion to the motorway.
He was told the LDR1(b) Kilcarn Link Road is a proposed road contained in the County Development Plan, which is to connect the Trim Road to the N3 Kilcarn Link Road which connects to Junction 8 of the M3 Motorway and will cross the L-8010 Borallion Road. Part 8 planning consent was obtained for spur road in 2019. There is currently no time line for the delivery of this road, which is expected to be delivered in conjunction with development of zoned lands in the area.
Cllr Fennessy said: "Navan is a growing town, our population is expected to reach 60,000 by 2050. We need to keep pace with that growth by developing the infrastructure required meet that need.
"Lands along the Borallion are zoned for industrial use. When developed they will provide much needed employment opportunities for the town. A road linking those lands with the motorway forms part of Master Plan 10 and is an objective in the County Development Plan.
"Works to develop the road have taken place, the Part 8 planning consent process completed in 2019. However, further progress is conditional upon the development of industrial Lands in the area, which is understandable.
"I'd like to see the zoned lands and motorway developed in tandem. The sooner the better too. Not only would we enjoy increased employment opportunities, but a link to the motorway would also take a lot of heavy traffic out of the town centre.
"How we move in and around Navan is up for huge change over the coming years. This project will form and integral part of that process. I'd like to see it developed without delay," he said.
