Death of veteran Meath sports journalist, Noel Coogan
The death has occurred of the veteran Meath sports journalist, Noel Coogan.
Mr Coogan, who lived at Woodview, Navan, died suddenly yesterday morning at his home (Tuesday).
He was aged 81 and a native of Ardbraccan, Navan.
Noel Coogan started his journalism career as Meath correspondent for the Drogheda Independent in February 1972, later joining the staff of the Meath Chronicle, before becoming sports editor of the newly-formed Meath Weekender in Navan in April 1984, a role he held until spring of 2005.
Many of the journalists who began working under him went on to become well-known sports writers in national titles. One of these, Paul Lennon, will recall Noel on LMFM's Late Lunch programme with Gerry Kelly this afternoon at 3.15pm.
He continued to work up until last week, making freelance contributions to various publications including Ireland's Own, the Meath Chronicle, and Meath Live online over recent years. He also contributed to Meath GAA's match programmes.
A keen cyclist with the Bohermeen club in his younger days, he published a book on the history of Navan Road Club, and had also been involved with Bohermeen Athletic Club.
Noel wis survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Mairead, Niamh and Siobhán; grandchildren, Lexi, Reece, Casey, Ava, Imran, Saeed and Imad; great-grandchild Harper; his four legged friend TJ, Niamh’s, partner Matthew, Siobhán’s, partner Asim, sister-in-law, Martina, brother-in-law Michael, nieces, nephews, relatives, good neighbours and friends.
He will repose at his daughter, Mairead’s residence (27 Woodview, Navan) on Thursday 6th February from 4 pm-7pm, arriving at St Ultan’s Church, Bohermeen on Friday morning for Funeral Mass at 11 am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
The Meath Chronicle extends sympathy to Noel's wife, Mary, and family, on their loss.
