Rathfeigh man critically injured in cycle race has passed away

A Rathfeigh man who critically injured in a cycle road race last Sunday has died.

Sean Lynch (34), suffered severe injuries in a crash which occurred near New Ross at 2pm.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Wexford General Hospital. He passed away at 11.06am today (Thursday, 9th May)

In a poignant Facebook post, Sean's brother Mick said: "Our champ passed away 11.06 today. Ride on Sean."

Sean was a member of the Drogheda Wheelers Club, and was a former member of Navan Road Club.

Drogheda Wheelers posted on Facebook: "It is with great sadness that Drogheda Wheelers Cycling Club announce the untimely death of its member, Sean Lynch following a tragic accident.

"The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all the medical staff who cared for Sean following the accident and expresses its gratitude to Wexford Wheelers Cycling Club for its support during this difficult time.

"Drogheda Wheelers would like to extend its sincere sympathies to the Lynch family.

Navan Road Club posted on Facebook: "Deepest condolences to the Lynch family on the tragic passing of Sean.

"Sean was one of life’s characters and had a great enthusiasm for life and cycling.

"Sean will be sadly missed by all his friends and past club mates at Navan Road Club. RIP Sean Lynch."

Many other cycling clubs and local sports clubs and groups paid tribute to Sean after hearing the news.

Moynalty Cycling Club added: "Remembering Sean Lynch. The members of Moynalty Cycling Club would like to express their sincere condolences to the Lynch family on the tragic death of Sean.

"We also send sympathy to his wide circle of friends and his cycling colleagues in Drogheda Wheelers and Navan Road Club whose colours he proudly wore.

"He will be sadly missed in the peloton and his big smile and boundless enthusiasm will be remembered by all who cycled and raced with him.

"Rest in peace Sean."
