"Taking drink driving to a whole new level"

A man arrested for drink driving near Gormanston on Wednesday night, wasn't just driving while under the influence - he appeared to be drinking and driving at the same time.

Gardai were shocked when they stopped him at a check point on the R132 at Gormanstown to find a pint of Guinness in the drink holder beside the drivers seat.

The pint was half full and there was an open eight can pack of the 'black stuff' on the back seat.

He was arrested, charged and is due to appear in Drogheda District Court in March.

Supt Peter Gilsenan said it was the most unusual case they had come across.

"Drink driving is still a problem, but we have a continuous road safety campaign on drink driving.

"We have designated checkpoints across the division and mandatory testing.

"The locations are picked randomly and we are continually making arrests," he said.

A post on the Meath Crime Prevention Facebook states: "Man arrested at a Meath Roads Policing checkpoint last night took drink driving to another level.

" Pint glass found beside drivers seat. He was arrested and later charged and will appear at Drogheda District Court. The Checkpoint was on the R132 at Gormanston."
