Walkers got awful shock when they spotted something among the rubbish

Walkers on Bohermeen Bog horrified by the sight of yet more illegally dumped rubbish got the fright of their lives earlier this week when they thought they saw human remains among lying amongst the debris. 

Between bags of rubbish, old buckets, mattresses and wood, Cariosa Sullivan and mum Esther from nearby Rath Chairn thought they had made a grim discovery when they spotted what appeared to be a human head face down in the water.

"We saw the rubbish and were trying to figure out how the people who had got it there because it's quite a way in to the bog and then we saw what looked to be a human head. It was some fright. it was just lying face down in the water, said Cariosa" 

Mercifully, the 'head' turned out to be the top of a mannequin's dummy, discarded along with a van load of other waste, one of many dumping episiodes that have blighted the scenic landscape around Bohermeen Bog.

"Mam said she was glad I was with her because her eyesight isn't great and she probably would have called the Gardai," laughed Cariosa.

The dumping which included newspapers dated January 2019, has since been reported to the Environment Section of Meath County Council who may be able to inspect the items to trace the ownership and origin of the rubbish.

In most cases it will be the home or business owner who faces the prosecution and not the 'man with the van' who often advertise collection services but have no authorised waste permits and ditch their loads in quiet rural locations such as Bohermeen Bog.
