Police in Rome, working with Merseyside Police, have arrested a 30-year-old man from Rome following the assault in April which left 53-year-old Dunboyne man Sean Cox in a critical condition in hospital.
The man was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of assault following the incident outside Anfield ahead of the Champions League match between Liverpool FC and AS Roma on 24th April.
He appeared in court in Rome on Saturday 6th October and has been remanded ahead of an extradition hearing.
Two other men have already been charged in relation to the incident. In August, a 29-year-old Roma fan admitted a charge of violent disorder. Daniele Sciusco, from Rome, was jailed for two and a half years at Preston Crown Court, while a Filippo Lombardi, a 21-year-old Italian, faces a charge of wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm and is due to stand trial this week. While Mr Lombardi denies that charge, last month he entered a guilty plea at Preston Crown Court on a charge of violent disorder.
Mr Cox, was initially treated in the Walton Centre in Liverpool, before being transferred to Beaumont hospital in Dublin and was subsequently moved to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoighre last week where he is currently undergoing an intensive 12 week period of treatment.
A major fundraising drive- 'Support Sean' has been launched to raise funds towards Sean's ongoing and long term medical expenses and care. A Go Fund me page 'Support Sean Cox' has raised over €16,000 to date.
A number of events are planned in the coming months including 'Run for Sean' on 29th October, at 11am. Further details of the campaign are on the facebook page 'Support Sean Cox'.
