Duffy nominated by Meath County Cllrs for Aras run

Meath County Council today became the first county council to nominate businessman Gavin Duffy as a candidate for the Presidential election on 26th October.
Duffy received 17 votes, Sean Gallagher got 7 votes and Joan Freeman got 2. There were 11 abstentions. three Cllrs were absent.
The businessman and Dragon's Den panel member now has to get three more councils to vote him onto the Presidential ticket. Each county council can nominate just one candidate. Aged 58, he is former owner of the HRM group of companies, one of Ireland's largest recruitment company. He was a shareholder in a local radio station at the age of 18, employing 20 people and in 1989 he was given a share in the country's first licensed public local radio station, LMFM, which was sold to UTV in 2004 for €10 million.

He founded his media and management consultancy - Gavin Duffy and Associates - in 1992, along with his wife and business partner Orlaith Carmody. He was one of eight people who petitioned Meath County councillors for a nomination at a meeting in Navan on 27th August. Sean Gallagher, who was not among the petitioners, has since announced his candidacy for the Presidency.
