Camogie chairman positive ahead of final

Meath Camogie Board chairman Christy Mangan is looking forward to Sunday's All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie final at Croke Park where the Royal County will take on Cork.

“Meath camogie has come on a very long journey in the past decade, back in 2007 a small group was formed to carry out a review of the structures and to build on the work of previous committees,” he commented.

“One of the players involved at that time is now a selector, Katie Mullen, she was very clear at the first meeting what she wanted to achieve and what her ambitions were for Meath camogie.

“With that information, and the input of others, we realised that we needed someone who would have the ability to take the team forward.
“That was a major challenge, who could we get that had the ability to transform the fortunes of Meath camogie? 

“We approached John Davis, John had a track record of success with the Meath hurlers, he had guided them to the NHL Div 1 a few years earlier.

“That really was our first success, John agreed to take on the challenge and over 10 years later he is still with us.

“John brought a new professionalism to the team, we had major expectations for the long-term and it's fair to say that the project was and is a success.

“Meath is no longer regarded as a poor relation of the camogie world and that's down to John Davis.

“John, and his late wife Teresa, made a big contribution to Meath camogie, they were a special couple and we will always be grateful to them.

“We now have a good pool of talented young players coming through the ranks for the county teams and we also get great support from Drumree GAA who provide us with the facilities for training.

“There is great commitment and dedication amongst the girls in the senior panel, we have had up to 90 training sessions so far for this campaign.

“Hopefully now we can win against Cork at Croke Park on Sunday,” he concluded
