Toner and Ireland now look for double delight
Moynalvey man Devin Toner played his part as Ireland chalked up an unforgettable victory over New Zealand last night and now they will be looking to achieve the double when the sides meet at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday 19th November.
It was a night to remember for Irish rugby fans in the Soldier Field, Chicago as Ireland defeated the All-Blacks 40-29 with Toner - along with his colleagues - earning a place in Irish sportinig legend.
This was the first time the Ireland senior men's team defeated New Zealand in 111 years and 29 attempts.
The win also ended New Zealand's 18-game undefeated run with Joe Schmidt's side putting in a rousing display.
Toner and the men in green led 25-8 at the interval with the help of tries from Jordi Murphy, CJ Sander and Conor Murray added to three conversions and two penalties from out-half Johnny Sexton.
In the second-half the All-Blacks came storming back with tries from TJ Perenara, Ben Smith and Scott Barratt, all converted by Beauden Barrett but a Simon Zebo try and Murray penalty helped to keep Ireland in front.
With New Zealand looking poised to strike for victory as they usually do Ireland conjured up a try from Robbie Henshaw and those watching the game in Beggy's, Navan roared in joy. They knew there was now no way back for the mighty All-Blacks.
Joe Carbery added the conversion to clinch a famous victory.
Now the scene is set for the second game between the countries in the November series.
Toner has achieved some tremendous results with Leinster and Ireland in the past but this must rank right up there in his long list of achievements.
