Joy for resilient OMP as they hit back to edge out town rivals
There was extra-time delight for OMP as they bounced back, not once but twice, to defeat local rivals Navan Town 3-2 in the Leinster Junior Cup at St Mary's Park today.
This was Navan Town's first defeat of the season and it was a sweet victory for OMP who displayed plenty to spirit and determination to come back and win.
There were also plenty of meaty challenges with experienced referee Conor Byrne showing 14 yellow cards. Two players - Navan Town's Kenny Gavin and OMP's Andrew Kearney - were sent off in the second-half of extra-time. Both were shown a second yellow also.
Stephen Gavin gave the 'visitors' an early lead but on 86 minutes the tenacious OMP side equalised.
The highly competitive Rob Coombes was brought down in the box and the same player stepped up to take the spot-kick. He despatched it to the net with a textbook shot into the corner.
It was onto extra-time and again Navan Town went in front this time from a superbly-struck free kick from Craig Dempsey on the edge of the box.
Again OMP hit back straight from the kick off with a mazy run by Ryan Murphy creating an opeing for Oisin McGuinness to score from close range.
Just before the break in extra-time Murphy bagged what proved to be the winner glancing the ball home.
There were one or two scares for OMP in the closing stages but they held firm.
