Crowds expected at Kieran Well on Sunday
Pilgrims walking to St Kieran's Well on Saturday night will be hoping to see the sacred trout appear in the well at Castlekeeran, Carnaross, while the following day a large crowd is expected to witness a daring display of horsemanship by the fearless Sergei the Cossack.
Legend has it that the sacred trout appear after midnight on the eve of Kieran Sunday, make the sign of the cross and then disappear again until the following year.
There will be a candlelight walk to the well leaving at 11pm on Saturday night from Carnaross, which is due to arrive at the well before midnight.
Meanwhile, the annual pattern day at St Kieran's Well will take place on Sunday (7th August) with Fr Sylvester celebrating the ceremony at 2pm.
This festival on the first Sunday in August has been celebrated for centuries, attracting visitors from all neighbouring counties.
A Field Day will start after the religious ceremony at 2:30pm.
One of the main attractions will be a live daring display of horsemanship by the fearless Sergei the Cossack. There will be family fun with pony rides, dog show and children’s fancy dress.
There will be under eight football with from teams Carnaross, Mahera, Kilmanhamwood and Moynalty.
Other attractions include an Irish dancing display, tug of war and live music by Matt Leavy and Ray Murtagh.
In Carnaross Inn at 9pm the ‘King & I’ will entertain at a fancy dress party where the King and Queen of Kieran will be chosen and crowned.
