Net fix the theme at Dunganny

It was all about the net, but there was no wifi issue at Dunganny today where a little bit of innovation was required before the start of the third round Walsh Cup game between Meath and IT Carlow which the hosts duly won by 2-16 to 1-12.

However, the start of the game was delayed after one of referee Anthony Keating's umpires spotted a problem with the net at the end of the pitch nearest Trim.

It was a predictable problem, no one checked the net beforehand and the umpire spotted that it needed to be properly attached to the crossbar.

Fortunately, Donal Smyth was on hand with some cable ties but there was no ladder to assist with the attachment process.

Despite health and safety regulations, the other umpire solved the problem by hoisting his college upwards and holding him there while he carried out repairs. The game started about five minutes behind schedule.

At this stage, no one is prepared to accept responsibility for the loose net and it is understood that a sanction may be imposed by Leinster Council under the 'deficient preparatios for games' rule.

Meath Hurling Committee may issue a statement which could suggest that as it is only a sub-committee that it didn't have the authority to make any changes or alterations at Dunganny and that it is probably the responsibility of the Co Board.

It is understood that newly-elected Leinster Council delegate Francis Lynch will be handed the task of making representations at the next provincial meeting.

The popular Kiltale clubman will probably seek an exemption from any sanctions that might be imposed on the grounds that officials and spectators going into the game were shocked at the €10 admission charge.
