September feast at solstice

It never rains but it pours! The crowds will be pouring in this September with ten events in the space of two weeks at Solstice Arts Centre.

The season starts off with the first film ever to be produced in Lesotho. ‘The Forgotten Kingdom’ is a beguiling quest steeped in the history and culture of the Basotho people. To get the best value from the ‘Film Bundle’, 4 Films for €18 you need to start with this film on Wednesday 16th. Also included in this offer is ‘Gemma Bovery’ in October, ‘Queen and Country’ in November and for Christmas, the Will Ferrell blockbuster, ‘Elf’.

Audiences can expect a very special evening of cabaret, electronic-vaudeville, rock and jazz for ‘The Whistling Girl’ on Friday 18th. This is a new show presented by renowned vocalist Honor Heffernan and composer Trevor Knight featuring music inspired by the poetry of the great Dorothy Parker. The show combines echoes of Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weil with a touch of Kraftwerk, Mark Knopfler and Leonard Cohen, as well as some of the keyboards flourishes familiar to fans of Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

Jack L returns with his new show, ‘Phantasmagoria’ for which he recently scooped the top award for Outstanding Vocal Performance at The San Diago International Arts Festival. Tickets only €20 are still available for this gig on Saturday 19th.

Following on from their sell-out concert the hugely popular ‘Navan Male Voice Choir’ return to host the ‘Canadian Orpheus Male Voice Choir’. Featured guests on the night will be ‘Tara Ladies Choir’ and Soprano, Louise Martyn. The show will take place on Sunday 20th with all proceeds going to S.O.S.A.D and Meath Alzheimers Society.

The following week brings four performances of the official stage adaptation of ‘The Gruffalo’. The award winning picture book, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Keeping it local, classical guitar player Pat Coldrick, will grace the stage on Saturday 26th. Pat’s musical interpretations and compositions make classical guitar exciting, interesting and more accessible to all. His performances interspersed with humorous banter appeal to a wide cross section of music lovers.

The final event in our two week marathon is a free screening of the RTÉ documentary ‘Writer in Profile: Mary Lavin’ as part of Meath County Council Mary Lavin Season. This screening on Tuesday 29th will be followed by a group read-in of ‘The Patriot Son’ led by Tom French.
