Navan cosmos finish season without silverware

Navan Cosmos were out of luck again in a final, the second time in a week, when they lost the Kilmessan Shield decider to Newfoundwell in the last game of the North East Football League season at the MDL tonight.

Cosmos were edged out by the score in a seven-goal showdown that saw each side finish with 10 men and, on the overall balance of decisions by referee David Murphy, Cosmos didn't fare well.

The Meath men trailed to a Kevin Bull goal for Newfoundwell at the interval and fell further adrift when Brian Kermode made it 2-0 for the Drogheda side eight minutes after the resumption

Kermode picked up a yellow card for a jersey-offence with his subsequent celebrations.

Cosmos bounced back instantly with a Laurence Ivers goal, but soon after they were reduced to 10 when Johnny Quigley saw red after the referee penalised Cosmos for a tackle on the edge of the area.

The card wasn't for the tacckle, which from the sideline looked like a good challenge - there may have been some verbal exchanges?

It got worse for Cosmos when Newfoundwell substitute Ian Devine made it 3-1 with 11 minutes remaining.

At that stage it looked all over, but Cosmos dug deep, pulled a goal back through Colm Gilsenan and then in the 89th minute equalised through a Conor Walsh penalty (see video clip) which also saw Newfoundwell's Dean Carolan pick up a second ywellow card.

That left it 10-a-side for extra-time, but a mistake gifted Newfoundwell the lead when Devine got in for a goal midway though the first period f extra-time.

There was no second reprieve for the Navan men who ended the season empty-handed.
