Castle to be at centre of braveheart 20 celebrations
Plans are continuing for an all-day family festival during the August Bank Holiday Weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the filming of the Oscar-winning movie 'Braveheart’ in aid of the Sean Lawlor Artists’ Trust.
Local company Trimfold Envelopes Ltd have come on board as major sponsors of 'Braveheart 20’.
On Saturday 1st August, a special outdoor screening of the movie will take place in the grounds of Trim Castle, the Norman fortress which was extensively used in the making of the movie.
The blockbuster movie saw Trim Castle become the city of York, with 80 carpenters and labourers constructing the elaborate streetscape of the city in the Middle Ages for the Battle of York, which occurred in 1298. Brendan Gleeson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan and Catherine McCormack were some of the names who appeared in the film alongside Gibson, along with hundreds of extras recruited from both the FCA and the local population.
The historical epic depicting iconic Scottish patriot William Wallace as he leads the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England, secured five Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Cinematography, Make-up and Effects/Sound Effects Editing.
The special screening of 'Braveheart’ will take place on a custom-made 60-metre outdoor screen, with many of the actors who starred inb the film confirmed to be walking the red carpet on the day.
There will also be a personal video message from director and lead actor Mel Gibson, as well as a spectacular parade preformed by the Society of William Wallace in the style of 13th century Scottish warriors, battle re-enactments from the Swords of Delreada, archery lessons from Athboy Archers, a musical performance from the mystical sounds of Landless and many local food and craft stalls.
An after-party featuring the Garth Brooks Experience will take place later in the evening at Trim GAA Club on the Newhaggard Road. Tickets for both events can be booked online through www.eventbrite.ie
'Braveheart 20’ is a non-profit event with all proceeds going to the Sean Lawlor Artists’ Trust and other local charities, such as Meath River Rescue, Trim Red Cross, St Joseph’s Community Nursing Unit and Trim Meals-on-Wheels.
The Sean Lawlor Trust is a charity organisation that has been set up to help artists who find themselves in dire financial straits and in need of care or medical attention.
Sean Lawlor played Malcolm Wallace in 'Braveheart’ but sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2010. Shortly after Sean’s passing, the trust was set up to ensure better support of Irish artists in need.
