Michael McCabe to be buried in Ballinacree tomorrow
Michael McCabe, father of former garda Maurice McCabe who highlighted malpractice in the Garda Siochana, will be buried in Ballinacree following his funeral Mass tomorrow (Thursday). Mr McCabe, Sheelin, Mountnugent, Co Cavan, died peacefully at his home on Monday.
Formerly of Sheelin Shamrock Hotel and Sheelin Boats, he took part in RTÉ’s documentary 'Whistleblower: The Maurice McCabe Story', where he was described as a steady and reassuring influence to his son, Maurice.
The documentary also revealed that the father-of-six was himself a whistleblower in his own working life. The programme-makers traced Sergeant McCabe’s dogged sense of justice to the example of his father, a vigorous man who marked his 90th birthday in the middle of the Disclosures Tribunal.
Predeceased by his wife, Peggy and his son, Thomas, Michael is survived by his sons, Michael, Maurice and Declan; daughters, Dominica Crean, Rosemary Tuite and Patrica Corcoran, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, 21 grandchildren, great-grandson Cian, brother Patsy, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Removal is to St Brigid's Church, Mountnugent, on Wednesday 12th June , arriving at 7pm. Requiem Mass on Thursday, 13th June at 11am, followed by burial in Ballinacree Cemetery.
