Dunboyne demolish Trim in re-fixture
Dunboyne made the most of a second chance when they won this SHC re-fixture against trim by 5-23 to 0-10 at Pairc Tailteann tonight and set up a top-of-the-table clash with Navan O’Mahonys at the weekend from which the winner will go straight into the semi-final.
For Trim, it’s a showdown with Na Fianna for a quarter-final place, but after this drubbing it’s possible that John Andrews may not be able to raise the morale of his players sufficiently for that challenge.
The game was re-fixed following a successful appeal of the Co Board’s decision to declare the initial 'abandoned two-minutes into second-half injury time encounter' void.
Trim were ahead by 0-16 to 0-13 in that game and really lost out as a result of the subsequent events as they also had three players suspended aeising out of the referee’s report although no one was red-carded.
And the opening half tonight was well-contested as Dunboyne took a 1-9 to 0-8 interval advantage before cutting loose in the second-half with a an amazing goal by Gary Watters from 80 metres kick-starting the rout.
In the opening half Trim tallied six wides before corner back Jamie Hackett split the posts in the 13th minute. By that stage Dunboyne had points on the board from Paul Fagan (free), Barry Watters and Niall Smith.
Trim looked much more assured after that opening score and they added points from Damien McGee and James Toher (two each), Ronan Fitzsimons, Luke Moran and Dimi Higgins.
Dunboyne remained in the ascendancy due mainly to some fine points from Smith and Sean Quigley (two each), Michael O'Grady and Niall Hackett who also provided the opening for Sean Moran's 28th minute goal when he delivered a superb sideline cut from around the 45-metre line.
After Moran’s second goal it was all one-way traffic in the direction of the Trim posts and even the watching Navan O’Mahonys players must have been impressed.
