Skryne GFC has paid tribute to one of its club presidents, Mr Joe Tormey of Collierstown, Tara, who passed away on Tuesday last, 1st March. The club said: "Joe was a stalwart of Skryne GFC, particularly when any development was undertaken by the club. Whether it was by way of major club draws, the weekly Blotto draw or indeed in manning the gat, Joe was always to the fore and felt privileged to be of assistance to the club. Even on the Sunday before his death, and while not feeling too good, Joe still arrived for the local Blotto draw with the usual bundle of envelopes for inclusion in the draw. He supported all teams from underage to senior and knew every player on every panel. "In a fitting tribute, members of the current senior squad carried his coffin the last few hundred metres to Skryne Church for his funeral, while flanked by a large number of past and present club members and officials. A recent photograph of Joe holding the Keegan Cup, taken at the celebrations after winning the 2010 championship, was placed on the coffin during his funeral mass. As a tribute to Joe, celebrant Fr Thomas O'Mahony said that the most notable thing he would remember about Joe was that while others might ask how the parish was faring, Joe would ask if he was at the match. Skryne club will miss Joe for his dedication, his work and also for his sharp wit at matches which often illuminated some dull moments on the sideline. To his wife Sandra and his family, Skryne GFC wish to extend their deepest sympathy." Mr Tormey was very proud of the fact he had sold the greatest amount of tickets for the recent house draw in aid of the development at Skryne GFC grounds. He was a selector with the Skryne team that won the 1989 junior championship. Deceased was a member of a well-known Tara farming family. His late father, Mr Ned Tormey, once owned the lands that include the Hill of Tara. In recent years, Mr Tormey, who was a shrewd judge of sheep as a farmer and buyer, moved to Collierstown from Riverstown House. Part of the course at Royal Tara Golf Club is on what was once part of the Tormey lands. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Serena; son, Darragh; grandchildren; sisters, brother; nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. The funeral took place on Thursday morning last from St Colmcille's Church, Skryne, to the adjoining cemetery. ___________________________________________________________ Catherine Ruane, Tara There was widespread sadness following the death of Mrs Catherine (Kathleen) Ruane, Belper, Tara, in early January. Mrs Ruane was well-known through her role as a nurse at St Joseph's Hospital in Trim prior to her retirement. Born in Cahir, Co Tipperary, in 1926, and studied nursing in England. She was a registered general nurse and a registered midwife. While working in Toronto, Canada, she met future husband, builder, James Ruane, from Kiltimagh, Co Mayo. They lived at Greenpark, Dunshaughlin, for a period, later moving to Belper. Mrs Ruane will be remembered as a kindhearted neighbour whose caring nature extended beyond her day to day nursing work. Mrs Ruane was predeceased by her daughter, Carmel, in July 1989, and by her husband, James, in November, 2007. She is survived by family, Brigid, Rita, Michaela, Mary Martina, Patrick and John; brother Patrick; sister Ellen; grandchildren, Rebecca, Michaela, Oisín, Emily, Louis and Angel, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. The funeral took place from the Church of the Assumption, Dunsany to the adjoining cemetery. ___________________________________________________________ Annie Thompson, Trim The regretted death occurred on 19th February last, at St Joseph's Hospital, Trim, of Mrs Annie Thompson, Newhaggard Road, Trim, at the age of 91. Deceased was a native of Kinnegad, and was daughter of the late Peter and Cathean Mooney. She was the last surviving member of the Mooney family, and was predeceased by her husband, James Thompson, in April 1963. Deceased loved playing bingo in Trim every Friday night and in Summerhill on Sunday nights. She was a daily Massgoer and was very proud of her gold Pioneer Total Abstinence Association pin. Mrs Thompson is survived by her daughter, Norah Egan, Trim, and son, James, Holland; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons, Christopher, Kevin and Brendan, all Trim. The funeral took place from St Patrick's Church, Trim, to St Loman's Cemetery. A month's memory Mass takes place on Sunday 13th March, at 11am, in St Patrick's Church. ___________________________________________________________ Sheila Allen, Dunshaughlin The death of Mrs Sheila Allen, College Close, Dunshaughlin, at Beaumont Hospital at the age of 78, was the source of widespread sadness. A native of Dublin, Mrs Allen (nee MacInerney), moved to Dunshaughlin with her late husband, Des, in 1989, and they immediately settled into the local community. Deceased was very proud of the fact that she was born in Dublin Castle. Her father was employed by the Office of Public Works, and some of the staff had living accommodation within the grounds of the castle. The family lived there for a number of years until they moved to an even more impressive location - a house in the Phoenix Park close to Aras an Uachtarain. Mrs Allen loved to tell stories about her childhood in the park, including the time that a Garda brought the local children out in a rowing boat on the lake in the grounds of the Aras. Another memory she had was of 'scutting' a lift on the wheelchair of President Douglas Hyde when his nurse would bring him out along the road on a sunny afternoon. For a number of years, Mrs Allen was very involved in the Dunshaughlin and District Senior Citizen's Club where she served as a committee member. One of the club's outings included a trip to Aras an Uachtarain where she got to see the inside of the house she had lived beside for so many years. Deceased enjoyed her garden, doing crosswords and getting away for holidays in the sun. She also loved her daily trip to the local shops which afforded her an opportunity to meet her many friends. She really enjoyed the banter with staff in the local supermarket. Her smile and infectious laugh will be missed by all her friends and neighbours. Mrs Allen was predeceased by husband, Des in January 2010, and is survived by her daughters, Deirdre Buckley and Geraldine Allen; sons, Carl and Derek; daughters-in-law; son-in-law; grandchildren; relatives and friends. The funeral took place on 3rd February from the Church of Ss Patrick and Seachnaill, Dunshaughlin, to Glasnevin Crematorium. Burial took place in Dunshaughlin Cemetery. ___________________________________________________________ Patricia O'Brien, Navan The death of Mrs Patricia O'Brien, Blackcastle Lodge, Navan, on 1st February last, caused widespread regret across the county and further afield. Aged 78, Mrs O'Brien was a well-respected teacher and sportswoman, and was wife of former Meath and Skryne footballer, Michéal O'Brien, of the 1949 All-Ireland winning Meath senior football team. A daughter of the late Patrick and Molly (Daly) Kenny of Dunshaughlin, she had played camogie with the local club in her youth. For the past 30 years, she was a popular and valued member of Royal Tara Golf Club, where she had served on the ladies committee. Mrs O'Brien's career saw her teaching at St Joseph's Convent of Mercy, Navan, from 1970-'73; the Vocational School, Navan, from 1973-'83; and in St Laurence's Community College, Drogheda, until retirement in 1989. She passed away at her daughter's residence in Stamullen. Mrs O'Brien is survived by her husband, Michéal; daughter, Aíne Landy, Herbertstown, Stamullen; son, shane O'Brien, Greenpark, Skryne; sisters, Bernadette O'Farrell, The Rise, Dunshaughlin, and Fionnuala Kenny, Flower Hill, Navan; brother, Ernest Kenny, Orwell Park, Templeogue; grandchildren, Orla, Donal, Shane, Stephen, Niamh, Caoimhe and Aisling; son-in-law, Bartle; daughter-in-law, Bernie; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. The funeral took place from St Mary's Church, Navan, to St Colmcille's Church, Skryne. A month's memory Mass will take place on Saturday next, 12th March, in St Colmcille's Church, Skryne, at 10am. ___________________________________________________________ Lola Lieghio, Skryne Mrs Lola Lieghio, Oberstown Cross, Tara, who passed away on 22nd February last, aged 89, was a native of Italy who was resident in Ireland. Daughter of the late Olimpio and Antonietta Scala, she was married to Joseph Lieghio, whose death occurred in October 1973. Aged 89, Mrs Lieghio will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Also predeceased by sons, Joseph and Patsy, she is survived by her daughters, Anna, Oberstown Cross, and Tereasa, Dublin; sons, Leo, Enfield, and Anthony, Dublin; grandchildren; great grandchildren; brother, Mario, Dublin; sister-in-law, Tereasa, Navan; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; nieces, nephews; relatives and friends. The funeral took place from St Colmcille's Church, Skryne, to Mount Jerome Cemetery. A month's memory Mass will take place in St Colmcille's Church on Saturday 26th March at 10am. ___________________________________________________________ Joe Staunton, Mayo Mr Joe Staunton, of Kilsallagh, Westport and The Pharmacy, Louisburgh, Co Mayo, who died on 14th February last, was father of Meath-based pharmacists, Padraic in Athboy, and Joe, who runs a similar business at Church Hill, at the Fair Green, Navan. Mr Staunton died peacefully at home. He is survived by his wife, Breege and family, Anne (O'Donnell), Padraic, Mary (Lyons), Tom, Mairead, Joseph, Therese (Dawson) and John; grandchildren; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces; cousins and many friends. The funeral Mass took place from St Patrick's Church, Lecanvey, followed by burial in Murrisk Abbey Cemetery.
