Jean McFadden, Gibbstown
Mrs Jean McFadden, Mayo Road, Gibbstown, Navan, passed away peacefully at Millbury Nursing Home, Navan, on 1st July. She was 83. Born in Churchill, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, in 1930, she moved to Glasgow in Scotland with her family, where she met Pat, her late husband.
They got married and came home to Ireland, settling in Gibbstown in 1958, where they reared eight children on their farm. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to 22 grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all.
Deceased is survived by her sons, Owen, James, Stephen and Brendan, Mayo Road, and Joseph, Chicago, USA; daughters, Rose Fulham, Dunderry; Sheila Thompson, Gibbstown, and Bridget Rooney, Carlanstown; brothers, Stephen and Seamus; sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren,
Mrs McFadden was predeceased by her husband, Pat; sister, Margaret, and brothers, Willie and Pat.
The funeral took place from St Catherine’s Church, Oristown, to Gibbstown Cemetery. A month’s mind Mass will take place in Oristown Church this Sunday, 4th August, at 10am.
Angela Barry, Dunboyne
Mrs Angela Barry of Baytown Park, Dunboyne, whose recent death occurred at Windfield Nursing Home, Dunboyne, was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law and friend to many.
The late Mrs Barry was the second youngest daughter of Paddy and May Barry from Kilcarn, Navan. Her father’s work as chief officer of Meath County Council brought the family from Limerick to Navan.
Deceased attended Johnstown National School and St Joseph’s Convent of Mercy in the town. Upon leaving school, she trained as a dental nurse and worked for a number of years.
It was through her father’s interest in greyhound racing that she met her husband, Thomas, who was at that time training greyhounds with his uncle, the renowned Paddy Barry of Baytown Park.
They married in September 1957 and began their married life in Cushinstown, Dunboyne. Four of their seven children were born there.
In 1967, the family moved to Baytown Park and three further children were born there. The family were well-known nationally for their breeding of pedigree Hereford cattle and the training of many successful greyhounds.
Angela Barry was a respected and popular person in the village of Dunboyne. She was known for her generous nature and was a friend to many. Because of her outgoing nature, she loved nothing better than a social occasion, in particular family gatherings.
Unfortunately, she became ill in the latter years of her life and spent the last two years under the excellent care of the staff of Windfield Nursing Home in Dunboyne.
Due to the fact that the nursing home was very close to her own home, she had daily contact with members of her family.
Deceased is survived by her husband, Thomas; children, Bernard, Mary, Phyllis, Yvonne, Geraldine, Gemma and Tom; sons-in-law, Paddy and John; daughters-in-law, Maree and Jacqui; grandchildren, great grandchild; sister, Pearl Fitzpatrick; brothers-in law, sisters-in-law and other relatives.
The funeral Mass was celebrated in the Church of Ss Peter and Paul, Dunboyne, by Fr Mark English, CC, Dunboyne, assisted by Fr Kevin Heery, CC, Navan. The Schola liturgical group from St Joseph’s Mercy Secondary School, Navan, provided sacred music for the ceremony. Burial followed in Rooske Cemetery, Dunboyne.
Nora Farrelly, Oldcastle
The sad death occurred on 10th July at her home at Ardfrail, Oldcastle, of Mrs Nora Farrelly. She was aged 60.
She was member of the Burke family of Allenstown, Bohermeen, Navan. All Mrs Farrelly’s family members played with distinction for Oldcastle GFC over the years, winning numerous underage and adult titles with the club.
Deceased is survived by her husband, John; sons, Ronan, John Paul, Thomas and Terence; daughter, Alison; mother, Mary; brother, Thomas; sister, Alice; nieces, nephews and grandchildren, Luke and Saoirse.
The funeral took place from St Bridget’s Church, Oldcastle, to the local cemetery.
Bridget Farrelly, Girley
Much sadness was occasioned over a wide area following the death of Mrs Bridget Farrelly (nee Woods), Girley, Fordstown, Navan, who passed away peacefully at Dublin’s Mater Hospital on 15th July.
A native of Newtown, Girley, Mrs Farrelly was a well-known personality in Athboy as the caretaker of Athboy Vocational School for over 32 years.
A very hard worker, she was highly thought of by both teachers and pupils and was fondly known to all as ‘Mrs F’.
A motor racing and motorcycle enthusiast, she rode her own motorcycle for over 40 years and attended numerous motorsports events, races and rallies over the years. She loved to see her hero, the late Joey Dunlop, race and win.
Mrs Farrelly also was a brilliant cook and, as a young woman, she trained and worked as a chef in many top hotels both in Ireland and the UK, some of which included Howth Castle, Rathmines Castle, Hunters Hotel and The Glenview Hotel in Co Wicklow where, in her spare time, she became an avid mountain climber and scaled the many peaks of the Wicklow Mountains.
A wonderful mother, grandmother and a true friend to all who knew her, she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Deceased is survived by her son, James Farrelly, Newtown, Girley, Fordstown; daughter, Marion Smith, Church View, Athboy; daughter-in-law, Jing; son-in-law, Aiden; grandchildren, Ryan, Karen, Martin and Rebecca, and nephews, Pat, Brendan and John and their spouses.
The funeral Mass took place on 18th July at Girley Church, followed by burial at the New Cemetery, Girley.
A month’s mind Mass will be held on Sunday 18th August in Girley Church at 10am.
Josephine Duignan, Navan
Great sadness was occasioned by the recent death at St Elizabeth’s Nursing Home, Athboy, of Mrs Josephine (Josie) Duignan of Abbeylands, Navan, at the age of 93.
Originally Josephine Reilly, a member of an old Navan family, she worked for many years in the Royal County Club at Cannon Row, Navan, before retiring at the age of 80.
She had a keen interest in gardening and led an active and full life until recently and was a very well-known and respected lady throughout the town.
Mrs Duignan spent the last eight months in the loving and attentive care of the nurses and staff of St Elizabeth’s Nursing Home, Athboy. She remained quick-witted and kept a keen interest in everything that was happening in her surroundings.
Predeceased by her husband, Jim, in 1982, she is survived by her daughter, Irene Woods, Donaghmore Lane, Navan; son, Eamonn Duignan, Hayes, Navan; grandchildren, Dara and Jack Woods; Eimear, Ellen, Myrna and Rory Duignan; son-in-law, Bernard Woods; daughter-in-law, Maura Duignan; sisters, Margaret (Maggie) Conway and Teresa (Tess) Rogers.
The funeral took place from St Mary’s Church, Navan, to the local St Mary’s Cemetery.
Johnny Melia, Trim
The recent death of Mr Johnny Melia (63), Newtown, Clonbun, Trim, was a source of deep regret throughout the town and surrounding areas.
Son of late Christina and John Melia, he was a native of Trim.
A keen gardener, he worked in St Joseph’s Hospital in the town for many years. He also loved sport and was a fan of Liverpool FC.
Deceased is survived by his wife, Teresa; sons, John and Mark; daughters, Elizabeth and Ruth; son-in-law, Fergal; daughters-in-law, Lisa and Susie; grandchildren, Melissa, JJ, Eabha and Isabella; nieces, nephews and friends, Pete and Angela.
The funeral took place from St Patrick’s Church, Trim, to Newtown Cemetery, Trim.
William Scully, Oldcastle
The sudden death recently occurred at his residence of Mr William (Billy) Scully (75), Ballyfore, Dromone, Oldcastle.
A native of the district, he worked in his earlier years as a machine operator with Christy Dolan Sand & Gravel. Following the sudden death of his brother, Michael, in 1983, and sister-in-law, Sheila, in 1979, he took over the role of father and mother to his 10 nieces and nephews, keeping the family together.
He was also a dedicated supporter of Meath GAA teams.
Deceased is survived by his brothers, Christy Scully and Jimmy Scully, Keenaghan, Dromone; sister, Jean Caffrey, Castlerahan; nieces, Mary Caffrey, Ballyjamesduff; Olive Hickey, Castlerahan; Violet Scully, Oldcastle, and Sheila Scully, Oldcastle; nephews, Michael Scully, Ballyfore; Barry Scully, Ballyfore; Paddy Scully, Oldcastle; Liam Scully, Oldcastle; David Scully, Oldcastle, and Hugh Scully, Ardee; grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral took place from St Mary’s Church, Moylagh, to Killallon Cemetery.
A month’s memory Mass will take place in Moylagh Church on Saturday 10th August at 5.45pm.
James Kerr, Navan
The death recently occurred of Mr James (Jamsie) Kerr, 76 Troytown Heights, Navan, who was well-known to many in the town, having worked for many years in local retail establishments and in the licensed trade.
The late Mr Kerr, who was aged 88, was born in November 1924 and lived in Monaghan until the age of four when his parents and brother moved to Kilberry, outside Navan, where they resided for four years before moving to Dunmoe, Navan.
He lived there until 22 years ago when he and his family moved to live in Troytown Heights, Navan.
Jamsie will be fondly remembered for the 38 years he spent working in Fitzsimons’s public house and grocery at Market Square, Navan, for the late Senator Patrick Fitzsimons and, in later years, Senator Fitzsimons’s son, former TD and MEP, Jim Fitzsimons.
Following the closure of the public house, he went to work in Cornmarket for Mr and Mrs McEvoy.
He later went on to work at the Maxol filling station at Flower Hill where he continued to work until he retired due to ill health 11 years ago.
Jamsie enjoyed his visits to the Galway Racing Festival and Fairyhouse for the Irish Grand National every year. His love of sport also included soccer - he was a Manchester United fan and follower of local club, Torro United.
He also attended many GAA matches, especially those involving his grandchildren.
He was also a regular at bingo in Navan O’Mahonys and Simonstown GFC each week. He is sadly missed by his loving family and all who knew him.
Predeceased by his son, Patrick, in 2011, deceased is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy (nee Dunne); daughters, Margaret Mueller, Switzerland, and Geraldine Moroney; sons, Seamus and Declan, Dunmoe, Navan; Martin, Dunboyne, and Paul, Troytown Heights, Navan; daughters-in-law, sons-in-law; grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
The funeral took place in St Oliver’s Church, Blackcastle, Navan, followed by burial in Kilberry Cemetery.
His month’s mind Mass will take place in St Oliver’s Church this Sunday, 4th August, at 10am.
