Death of former Kells councillor
Former Kells Urban Council Chairman, Johnny Maguire, of Blackwater Heights, Kells died on Friday at Our Lady’s Hospital Navan at the age of 88.
Huge crowds attended the removal of his remains from the hospital last night and the funeral to St Colmcille’s Cemetery, Kells
takes place today, following mass at St Colmcille’s Church at 3pm.
A member of Kells Urban Council from 1974 until 1999, he was also active in Kells Tidy Towns and Kells Handball Club, as well as many other local clubs and campaigns.
His wife Teresa died nine years ago and he is survived by his sons, Patrick, Donnacha and John, daughters, Geraldine, Catherine, Teresa and Maria, sisters, Kathleen, Betty and Anna and brother Patsy.
Among the huge crowds who attended the removal of his remains last night were representatives of the town of San Patricio in Italy, which was twinned with Kells in the 1980’s, representative of the Meath Association of London, the Meath Association of Scotland and representatives of Derry City Council.
A meeting of Kells Town Council last night observed a minutes silence and was adjourned as a mark of respect.
