Seamus McEnaney.

McEnaney surprised by chairman's approach

While the chairs were being reshuffled on the good ship Meath GAA, the captain of the enterprise Seamus McEnaney defiantly manned his post last weekend as he attended SFC club games at Ashbourne on Thursday night, Simonstown on Friday night and Kells on Saturday evening as well as scouting Meath's Leinster SFC opponents Wicklow in their final NFL Div 4 game against Clare in Aughrim on Sunday. Under pressure since Meath's disappointing NFL Div 2 relegation following their humiliating loss to Louth, McEnaney was visited by Co Committee chairman Barney Allen on Thursday afternoon and asked to tender his resignation from his post. McEnaney was surprised by this and rejected the chairman's approach. He vowed to fight on in the role and complete the job he was tasked with when he was first appointed in late 2010 and then returned for a second term following the All-Ireland SFC qualifier defeat by Kildare last year. Shortly after McEnaney vowed to stick by his principles and his belief that he has "never walked away from a fight in his life" the Meath Co Committee released a statement declaring that they would recommend that his term as manager would be terminated at the next Co Committee meeting on Wednesday 18th April and he would be replaced by four-time All-Ireland-winning Meath legend Sean Boylan. When pressed as to why Allen requested that McEnaney step down from his role, the Monaghan man revealed that the chairman informed the manager that he was "under pressure from the executive and club delegates."
