On 21st June last, sitting on a bench at Dalgan Park, one of her favourite places in this world, having a chat with her brother Odran and her sister-in-law Theresa, and old friends, Mrs Eithne Creighton passed away suddenly, causing widespread shock and sadness. Mrs Creighton was a staff nurse at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan for 32 years. She was known for her caring and proactive nursing. Over the years she helped not only the patients she nursed, but also their loved ones. She volunteered for many years with the Irish Cancer Society. The staff, her friends and colleagues, from the hospital showed their respect with a guard of honour to accompany Eithne on her last journey to St Finian's Cemetery. At her funeral Mass, her good friend and chief celebrant, Fr Gerry French, talked about her as 'a wounded healer'. He spoke about how she used her own experiences in life to give her the strength and insight to help others, to listen quietly to their needs, to help them work towards their own solutions and to do it with a bit of humour. She was always there for people. Mrs Creighton was a Mayo woman through and through. Born in Taugheen into a farming family, she went to school at the St Louis Convent in Kiltimagh. After finishing her schooling, she travelled to London where she trained as a nurse at the Whittington Hospital. On her return to Ireland, she married Willie Creighton and started a family. She returned to her career when she took up a post at the Sacred Heart Home in Castlebar. The family moved to Navan in 1972. Mrs Creighton lived for her family. Even though they are scattered all over the globe she made effort to visit as often as possible, just recently returning from Australia where she had been adopted as a 'fair dinkum Aussie'. Her grandchildren meant the world to her. She was so proud of them all. Deceased was a woman of courage and her philosophy on life is reflected in one of her favourite prayers, 'Never Give Up', spoken at the funeral Mass and requested by many since. Her husband, Willie, passed away in May 2007 after a long illness, and deceased is survived by her family, Ann, Sean, Liam, Una and Eithne; grandchildren, Aoife, Eoin, Matthew, Simon, Hannah, Daniel and Molly; sons-in-law Pierre, Dan and Michael; daughters-in-law, Pasqueline, Jennifer and Kevina; sister Joan, brothers Brendan, Odran, Joe and John, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.
