1,500 free car parking spaces in Navan for Christmas week

Shoppers in Navan are to benefit from an additional 500 free parking spaces from this Friday following a decision by the town council to include the town's long-stay car parks in the special Christmas scheme. At a meeting of Navan Town Council last week, Cllr Shane Cassells proposed that the long-stay car parks at Navan O'Mahony's, Pairc Tailteann and the old swimming pool site on the Commons Road be added to his earlier proposal of free on-street parking. This move has resulted in a total of 1,500 free public spaces being available to shoppers for Christmas week. There are over 500 on-street spaces in Navan while the short-term car parks provide another 500. There are 220 spaces available on the Fair Green, 110 on Kennedy Road, 88 at Abbey Road and 87 on Brews Hill. The remaining 500 spaces are available in the GAA grounds, the Kells Road car park and at The Ramparts. The scheme starts this Friday and will run until Christmas Day with free parking being available from 11am onwards each day. Cllr Cassells welcomed the fact that there was now a full provision of free public spaces and he expressed the hope that as many people as possible would support local shops this Christmas. "It has been a difficult year for the economy and for ordinary people the length and breadth of the country," remarked Cllr Cassells. "The move to have at least one week of free parking is a small way of trying to reduce costs this Christmas and, hopefully, it will encourage people to shop in Navan."
