A Torro Utd selection from a blitz competition - Torro will host Park Celtic Summerhill at the MDL on Monday night

Monday kick-off for North East Women's League

The long-awaited local Women's Soccer League will kick-off next Monday evening across Meath, Cavan and Louth under the auspices of the North East Football League.

Eight teams will be involved in the Monday night action at four venues, three outside Meath which means there will
be only one game locally.

That will take place at the MDL in Navan whhere Torro Utd will host Park Celtic Summerhill in the first round of action at 8pm.

The other three Meath teams will all be on road - Trim Celtic travel to Monasterboice to tackle Albion Rovers.

Skryne / Tara will be heading to Dundalk and an outing against Quay Celtic at Clancy Park while Slane Wanderers will make the trip to Cavan to play Kingscourt Harps.

Essentially, this is a development league in advance of the competition that will start in March 2020 as adult action returns after a gap of some five years since the last officially-sanctioned competition.

Initially the North East Women’s Football League (NEWFL) was scheduled to kick-off in March 2019.

The last competitive adult league was played in 2014 and since then efforts by local enthusiasts have failed to get
the green light from the FAI.

Plans are now in place to cater for the ladies again and the action will start on Monday night.

At a blitz 12 months ago there was a plan for a league to start in March of this year, but that was delayed.

“We want to promote a League, to encourage interest in current young female players from the age of 15 upwards to

continue their involvement in the game,” stated Park Celtic Summerhill official Paddy Mulreid at that time and the aspirations still remain.
