VEC compile history of Kells school as part of its re-launch
AS PART of the re-launch of the former Vocational School building in Kells (now the Alpha Learning Centre), County Meath VEC is compiling a popular history of Kells Vocational School. The Vocational School - formerly known as the Technical School or the Tech - first opened its doors to students in February 1931 and its function as a post-primary school came to an end in July 1988 when Kells Vocational School amalgamated with the Christian Brothers Secondary school to form Kells Community School. In the 20 intervening years, the building has housed Youthreach, Adult Literacy, Adult Education, VTOS and the Kells Court Service. Many a nostalgic glance is passed at the fine 1930"s edifice on Bective Street from students curious to know what changes have been made to their old school. The old vocational school has recently been refurbished and renamed The Alpha Learning Centre. County Meath VEC refurbished the building using it own craft team of Joe Carberry, Dunshaughlin, Christy Reilly, Navan and Pat Gogarty, Kells, led by Peter Gallagher, county buildings co-ordinator. As part of the formal relaunch of the building, Meath VEC is compiling a popular history of Kells Vocational School. Bernadette Walsh, a former pupil herself and now head of County Meath VECs Corporate and Education Services, is coordinating this project. Anyone with memorabilia, information or photos are asked to contact Bernadette Walsh, Meath VEC: (046) 9068244/9021447 or e-mail bernadette.walsh@meathvec.ie
