SIPTU workers accept Tara cost cutting plan

Tara Mines production staff have voted to accept a cost-cutting package aimed at preventing the closure of the site and the loss of nearly 700 jobs. SIPTU's 350 workers at the mine voted by a 60/40 margin to accept new terms providing for continuous, four cycle shift working. When votes were counted on Thursday morning, Meath branch organiser John Regan said, 'The tightness of the vote, especially on pay, shows that a lot still needs to be done by the company on how it implements the new terms." Balloting of craft, supervisory and administrative workers continues over the weekend.
