Death of Fr Andy Farrell

The retired parish priest of Trim, Fr Andy Farrell, who also served as parish priest in Kingscourt and ADM in Navan, has died, aged 87.

Living at Knightsbrige Retirement Village in recent years, the Raharney, Co Westmeath, native was parish priest in Trim from 1994 to 2008  and celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood in 2007.

After being ordained in 1957, Fr Farrell spent five years in the USA, was then appointed a chaplain to Navan Hospital and also spent a year teaching in St Finian's College.

Fr Farrell returned to Navan where he was based for 25 years, and was subsequently appointed parish priest in Kingscourt, his last parish before moving to Trim 14 years ago.

Fr Farrell was instrumental in setting up Navan Credit Union, and Navan Meals On Wheels as well as St Mary's School in Athlumney, while he was in Navan parish.

In Kingscourt, Fr Farrel renovated three churches, two cemeteries and built a new parochial house.

When he moved to Trim, Fr Farrell oversaw necessary infrastructural work in St Patrick"s Church and Boardsmill Church. He was approached about setting up a retirement complex in Trim and sold land for the project, which is now the Knightsbridge retirement complex.

It is expected his funeral will take place in Trim on Thursday at 12 noon.
