THE IRISH DERBY– Níos Mó Ná Rása” (More Than a Race) airs on TG4 on Wednesday 11th March at 9.30pm.

'THE IRISH DERBY– Níos Mó Ná Rása' chronicles the history of this iconic horse race and how it mirrors the evolution of the thoroughbred horseracing industry in Ireland. The one-hour documentary narrated by actress Fionnula Flanagan, brings viewers back to its humble beginnings, held at the legendary Curragh racecourse since 1866. Set against the backdrop of relevant historical events, using rare archive footage and very special location access, the programme explores the magic of its colourful and inspirational past to becoming a top international race and social occasion.

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary racehorse Nijinsky’s achievements, including winning the Irish Derby and the British Triple Crown, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since. The documentary looks at the impact these achievements had on the breeding industry, through his sire Northern Dancer, as the art of breeding is at the heart of it all.

This big day out at the historic Curragh racecourse is one of the most important dates on the social calendar. Former top fashion designer Ib Jorgensen played his part in the glamour stakes by making sure his clients didn’t turn up in the same outfit!

Contributors to the show include trainers Aidan and Joseph O’ Brien, Dermot Weld, John Gosden and Michael Stoute, jockeys Frankie Dettori and Seamie Heffernan, former jockeys Lester Piggott, Michael Kinane and Pat Smullen, historians Aine Hensey and Guy Williams, John Magnier from Coolmore Stud and broadcaster Ted Walsh.
