Recent deaths 12-09-09
The regretted death occurred on 25th August last, at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, of Mr Terry Caffrey, Blackcastle Estate, Navan, aged 74. Deceased was a native of Knocknagarton, Virginia. He was a well-known handyman in the locality and worked for many years with Meath County Council. Mr Caffrey will be sadly missed by his family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. He is survived by his wife, Maisie; sons, Thomas and Terence; sister, Kathleen; brother, Brendan; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Mary; daughters-in-law, Noeleen and Helen; grandchildren, Alexander, Luke, Evan, Chloe and Hollye; nephews, nieces and extended family. The funeral took place from St Oliver's Church, Navan, to Dunderry Cemetery. A month's memory Mass will take place on Sunday 27th September at 12 noon in St Oliver's Church, Blackcastle, Navan. _____________________________________________________________ Bartle McEnroe, Oldcastle The death occurred in early July of Mr Bartle (Batty) McEnroe, Liss, Oldcastle, a renowned breeder of Angus cattle and exporter of breeding heifers to Scotland. Mr McEnroe's herd is famed throughout the Aberdeen Angus breed, and deceased attained a unique milestone when his bull, Duke of Liss, was sold to Pope John 23rd's herd at Castle Gandolfo, in 1962. Among the bulls sold to AI was Minit of Liss in 1995. In his 50 years as a member of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society, Mr McEnroe held the position of Council chairman and Society president. He judged at Perth and Stoneleigh, and was one of the first Irish breeders to exhibit and win at the Smithfield Show in London. His links with Scottish breeders and farmers were further strengthened as he was a supplier of breeding sucker heifers from Ireland, especially the noted Irish Blue Greys, which were much prized in Scotland. Two of Mr McEnroe's sons, John and Leo, continue to breed and exhibit pedigree and show cattle. Predeceased by his wife Mamie (Herbstreit) and brother, John, he is survived by family, Kay, John, Bart, Mary and Leo; sisters, Peggy, Maureen, Sr Kathleen HRS, Evelyn and Detty; brother, Pat; 16 grandchildren; in-laws, relatives and friends. The funeral took place from St Brigid's Church, Oldcastle, to the local cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ Alice Murphy, Duleek Mrs Alice Murphy (84), Station Road, Duleek, who died recently at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, was a member of the Coleman family of Duleek. Deceased is survived by her husband, Daniel; daughters, Patricia Courtney, Lilian Powderly, Cathleen Flynn and Alice McAree, all Duleek; brother, Christy Coleman; 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The funeral took place from St Cianan's Church, Duleek, to the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Duleek. _____________________________________________________________ Christopher Ward, Rathmolyon The death recently occurred in St Joseph's Hospital, Trim, of Mr Christopher (Kit) Ward, Togher, Rathmolyon. He was 83. A native of Doolinstown, Boardsmill, he worked for Meath County Council for many years. In his younger days, he played hurling with the Boardsmill club and remained a keen sportsman throughout his life, with a particular interest in shooting, darts and horse racing. He also enjoyed a game of cards. Predeceased by his late wife, Mary, in 2004, he is remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather, and a great friend to all who knew him. Deceased is survived by his sons, Michael Ward, Ballivor, and Eamon Ward, Trim; daughters, Kathleen Staunton, Leitrim; Ann Fagan, Enfield, and Angela Geraghty, Trim; sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The funeral took place from St Michael's Church, Rathmolyon, to the local cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ Margaret Gorman, Kilmessan The death occurred on 16th August last, at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, of Mrs Margaret (Peggy) Gorman, Marshalstown, Kilmessan. She was aged 92. Ms Gorman was retired from her position as ward sister in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown. She always held a great passion for all sports, and in particular, was a keen follower of the Meath football team, regularly attending matches in Croke Park and other venues from 1935 to 2004. She also lived in Glasnevin, Dublin, for many years. Daughter of the late Christopher and Bridget Gorman of Crerogue, she is survived by her sisters, Mary and Terry; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and relatives. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Kevin, Finian, Patrick, Christopher and Brian, and her sister, Kate. The funeral took place from the Church of the Nativity, Kilmessan, to the adjoining cemetery. A month's memory will take place at 8pm this Friday 11th September, in Kilmessan Church.
