Johnstown stir up a goal storm

Navan club Johnstown stirred up their own storm yesterday in a weather-decimated Meath & District League when they fired 11 goals past Drogheda side Grove Rangers in the Kilmessan Shield on Sunday. The game was one of only nine which survived the bad weather with a whopping 41 games postponed as the backlog of fixtures continues to pile up and provide headaches for the beleaguered committee. Johnstown won"t be complaining after they set a new record with 10 players making the scoresheet in what turned out to be no more than a training session. The first goal arrived inside three minutes and from there on in it was all one-way traffic as the Meath men established a 5-0 interval advantage. Grove"s cause wasn"t helped by the dismissal of their centre-half just before half-time for a second yellow card. The Johnstown scorers were Justin Flynn (two), Kevin O"Connell, Darren Tully, Shane Sheridan, Ciaran Croke, Donal Cuffe, Gavin Becton, Ronan Croke, David Reilly and Dave Grumley Grove never once stopped trying to play football, but just couldn"t get the ball up to their strikers. Kevin Costelloe in the Johnstown goal didn"t have one save to make and touched the ball no more than a half a dozen times in the match.
