Cosmos dumped out of FAI Junior Cup

This was always going to be a difficult assignment for Navan Cosmos as they took on junior football big guns Killester Utd in the FAI Junior Cup at the Meath & District League grounds on Sunday. There was nothing in the early exchanges to indicate the avalanche of goals to come later on as there wasn't much between the teams. Cosmos created two good early opportunities with Mark McCabe going close with a header and a shot that whizzed just over. The opening goal arrived when, after an attempted clearance was miscued, a Killester player nipped in to score. That goal was the signal for the floodgates to open as the Meath side struggled to contain the marauding Killester outfit who started to created a string of opportunities. Cosmos conceded two more in quick succession in the lead up to half-time to give themselves a real mountain to climb and it got worse for them as the visitors took complete control. Ivan Reilly tried hardest for Navan Cosmos with McCabe also impressing. Navan Cosmos - J O'Connor; M Rogers, D Coogan, T J Mackey, D Ratty, B Newman, I Reilly, J Martin, L Ivers, S Ivers, M McCabe. However, Parkvilla player/manager Alan Murphy will have mixed emotions about this encounter that was made up of the good, the bad and the ugly at Claremont Stadium on Friday night. The 'good' for the home side was the fact that they tore the visiting defence to shreds at will and could quite easily have reached double scores. The 'bad' was that on three occasions they allowed their opponents to scored within minutes of they themselves finding the net. And the 'ugly' was a brief spell midway through the second-half when tempers threatened to flare. The fact that proceedings were kept in check must go down to firm officiating from local referee Charlie Dowdall. The man in black was never more than a few paces from any incident and he steered the players back to their primary purpose, with the minimum of fuss. The winners took the lead 25 minutes into the game when Andy Williamson's powerful header found Darryl Collins on the half-way line. The midfielder set of on a determined run that took him into the opposition's penalty area and his unselfish square ball was knocked into the net by John Power. Collins was also the architect of the second score, when his pinpoint free kick found the head of Robbie Dillon and the subsequent bullet-like header was in the net before the goalkeeper could react. Before a minute had elapsed the visitors reduced the lead. Stephen Moran added the third when Alan Kerr's fine header set him free and the striker finished confidently to leave it 3-1 at the break. Early in the second half, Moran, who along with Power had turned the visiting rearguard inside out, went on a strong run, his blistering drive was too much for the 'keeper to deal with and Power was on hand to slot home. Power completed his hat-trick when he headed in Moran's pin-point cross. Almost immediately afterwards Boyne Rovers registered their second goal. Midway through the half Power turned provider when set up Moran for his second of the night. The Drogheda side added two more but Parkvilla held on.
