Kids injured at Kells derelict site
THE continuing problems with derelict buildings in the Maudlin road, Kells, resulted in casualties last week, as two young boys suffered injuries after walking over debris on the site. Cllr Conor Ferguson criticised property owners at length at the September meeting of the local town council for failing to fence off the properties concerned and, this week, renewed his call to them, as well as to parents to encourage their children to stay away from the lands concerned. Effective fencing was the 'minimum required to tackle access there', he added, since the properties concerned were 'regularly used by drink and drug abusers causing problems, including some serious assaults' earlier this summer. The councillor is also pressing the town hall to bring fresh pressure on the ESB to upgrade public lighting in the Gardenrath, Cross Carrick and O"Growney Terrace areas as the winter nights draw in. These are popular strolling routes for the many residents now taking healthy walks, he said. However, without proper lighting, that opportunity would be lost on the darker evenings, while older pedestrians would also face additional difficulties.
