XY Factor unearths talent in Trim schools

Talented students from Boyne Community School and Scoil Mhuire in Trim came together last weekend for their third annual XY Factor Talent Competition. The event was organised, hosted and sponsored by the parents" association of Boyne Community School and the competition was open to students from Boyne Community School and Scoil Mhuire, Trim. On Friday night, 21st November, some 26 acts (14 senior and 12 junior), including bands and a great variety of instrumental and vocal acts, performed. Twelve acts were selected (six junior and six senior) to go forward to the final the next evening. The senior category was won by Boyne Community School Leaving Cert student, Kelvin Doran, for his dazzling and roof-lifting drum solo performance. Second place went to Kerri Thornton for her vocal solo, while in third place were Colm Hackett and Gary Monaghan for their guitar duet. Rebecca Doran was fourth with her piano solo and fifth place went to Muireann Ni Raghallaigh for her harp solo. 'Secrecy", a band consisting of Conor Smith, Jonathan Mooney, Daniel Guidera and Chris Clarke, finished in sixth place. In the junior category, first place went to Joseph Callaghan, a Boyne Community School first year student who sang Leonard Cohen"s 'Hallelujah" accompanied on piano by music teacher, Emer O"Connor. Aodhan Scott was second with his guitar solo and in third place was Maebh Ni Raghallaigh who performed a concertina solo. Kathleen Ennis with her guitar and vocal solo finished fourth, while Joy Sweeney with her vocal solo finished fifth. Jenny Prior was sixth, also with a guitar and vocal solo. Kerri Thornton was also awarded the Felim ' Raghallaigh Memorial Award on Friday night for being the most promising performer. The event showcased two nights of unbeatable talent and entertainment and the Boyne Community School parents" association has thanked all those involved in the planning and preparation and those who made it happen on the night, especially all the stars. They are looking forward to next year"s competition with the reminder that it"s an open talent competition - all talent is welcome, be it music, drama, dance, mime, or anything else imaginable.
