Dunboyne pupil's work chosen for Londis book
Twelve-year-old Jessica Smith from Dunboyne has been chosen from over 3,000 entrants to have her story featured in the Londis 'Write up my Street' book in aid of Barnardos. Following a nationwide competition in April of this year, 30 young authors aged between five and 18 years have had their stories published in 'Write up my Street', a powerful and inspiring collection of short stories based around community life in Ireland today. Londis received over 3,000 entries from young people all over Ireland who wrote short stories based around the theme 'There's no Community like My Community'. Some 30 stories were selected for publication in the book, which is now on sale exclusively in Londis stores nationwide. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Barnardos children's charity. Jessica was also unveiled as the overall winner of the 12 years and under prize and, as a result her school, St Peter's National School, will recieve a €5,000 library voucher to inspire future young authors. The school will also be visited by acclaimed Irish novelist and childrens writer, Sarah Webb, who will read from the book. The creativity and depth of connection within these stories is inspiring. From the heartfelt realism of a community coming together to support a family during a difficult time, to the vivid portrayal of a make believe dragon community, each story paints a picture of community life which is extremely strong, depicting communities which strengthen in the face of adversity and flourish in the collective achievements of their people. The book is a wonderful insight in to the power of community though the eyes of Ireland's young people. It is a unique celebration of why for each and every one of us there simply is 'no community like my community'.
