Fireman injured fighting Kilberry blaze

A fireman was injured as he fought a major blaze which swept through a grain store in Kilberry on Monday evening. Up to nine fire units attended the scene of the fire which devastated the grain facility, which is owned by local farmer Gene Reilly. The fireman suffered burns to his arms and was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital but was released some hours later. Meath County Council has launched an investigation into the accident. A spokesperson for the council said that the incident would be investigated as part of health and safety procedures and this was routine for any accident at work, large or small. The blaze broke out at the store in Kilberry Farms at about 7.30pm and was attended by nine engines from Navan, Kells, Trim and Nobber. A number of men were working in the area, when the fire broke out and according to owner, Gene Reilly, they were lucky nobody was killed. "There was just a ball of smoke. Thank God there was no fatality," he said. Mr Reilly said that a huge amount of damage had been done to the buildings and a lot of grain was lost. "It was lucky there was no bad wind and that it was raining. It is a major blow to the business, but it could have been worse. "Somebody could have been killed," he said. He expressed concern for the fireman who was injured and thanked all his neighbours who had rallied round to help. "It is a huge blow, but we are farmers. We're resilient," he said. A house was damaged by fire in Castletown, in the early hours of Monday morning. The blaze broke out before 2am and two units of Navan fire brigade attended the scene. There was nobody in the house at the time and nobody was injured, but there was severe damage to the roof, the kitchen and a number of other rooms. On Saturday two units of Navan Fire Brigade attended a fire at an old building known as the old Spicers Mill in Navan, at around 6pm. Nobody was injured and firefighters quickly gained control of the blaze. Meanwhile, Navan Fire Service went to the rescue of a teenager who fell through the roof of an old building at the Mollies in Navan at around 5pm on Saturday. It is believed the youth fell more than 20 feet and the fire services helped the ambulance crew gain access to him before he was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for treatment.
