Jazz and trad combo from Tarab Ensemble
Acclaimed musician Francessco Turrisi and his latest evolution of his Tarab Ensemble play the Solstice Arts Centre, Navan on Friday 23rd July. Audiences can expect an eloquent concert of excellent world music, blending jazz and traditional music from across Europe. Turrisi, a Milan native, has made a real impression since moving to Ireland, bringing a fresh perspective informed by his background in Italian baroque music and jazz piano. In his Tarab he performs on accordion and frame drums, and convincingly bridges traditional music from around the Mediterranean in a band that also includes saxophonist Nick Roth and cellist Kate Ellis. Their jazz and classical backgrounds are finely countered by traditional flautist Emer Mayock who, along with percussionist Robbie Harris, brings an innate understanding of melody and form in Irish music. Turrisi directs proceedings with taste and subtlety throughout, deftly balancing these powerful elements to harmonious effect. The Tarab ensemble for this concert will be joined by Bulgarian-born Theodosii Spassov who is a virtuoso kaval player. The kaval is an eight-hole wooden 'shepherd' flute. He has developed his own unique style of playing the instrument by synthesizing traditional folklore with jazz, fusion and classical music. Theodosii toured with 'Riverdance' from 1998-2001. Tickets are €15 full price and €12 concession rate. To book, contact Solstice Arts Centre box office on (046) 909 2300 or book online at www.solsticeartscentre.ie.
