Dunderry show plenty of promise

Dunderry took another step on the road to recovery when they negotiated St Colmcille's in the IFC quarter-final at Seneschalstown on Sunday. This was a solid performance by Dunderry who maintained their improved form as they forged into a 1-8 to 1-2 interval lead. Anthony Kane's 10th minute goal gave Dunderry the initiative, but St Colmcille's kept their faint hopes alive when they beat David Jennings close to the interval. That goal was only a minor blip for Dunderry who took over after the resumption and were well on the way to the last four when TJ Garry found the net to put some extra gloss on the performance. Dunderry - D Jennings; G Newman, D Clarke, K Slattery; D Callaghan, E Stephens, C Harte; B Doherty, P Callaghan; S Harte (0-1), B Callaghan (0-1), A Newman; TJ Garry (1-6), K Dowd (0-2), A Kane (1-5). The Ballinlough supporters were cheering loudest at half-time after watching their team dictate the opening 30 minutes during which they established a 1-7 to 0-4 interval lead. However, Oldcastle were transformed after the resumption with substitute Robert Pakenham making a huge contribution. Oldcastle whittled away at Ballinlough's margin and Paddy Gilsenan's point forced the game into extra-time. Ballinlough failed to hit the target in extra-time and Nicky Galligan's goal in the second-half of extra-time sealed victory and earned a place in the last four against Dunderry. Tommy Rahill, Rory McHugh, Eoin Gilsenan, Terry Farrelly, Paddy Gilsenan and Niall Mangan who scored seven points were particularly impressive for a hard-working Oldcastle side. Cortown led by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break and looked set for victory. However, St Colmcille's closed the gap to a point before a scambled goal with 14 minutes remaining gave them the lead. Mark Casserly, John Casserly, Glenn Loughran, Breen Smith, Gary Coyne and Brian Casserly were best for Cortown.
