Geith workers meet with union in face of possible job losses
Fears that more than 100 jobs could be lost at Geith International in Grangegeeth has been described as a devastating blow to the north and east Meath region. Workers at the factory outside Slane, were told by local management last Friday that there was a distinct possibility that all manufacturing at the site would be transferred to Asia, but no definite decision has yet been made.
The company is expected to give a clearer picture of the future of the Slane plant on Friday of this week.
SIPTU organiser Denis Sheridan said he would be meeting with the workers this morning (Wednesday).
“We will do all we can to try and save all the jobs in the Grangegeeth plant,” he said. It is believed that the company intends to cease manufacturing in Slane but a small number of jobs would be retained as the Grangegeeth base would remain as a distribution centre, which will import ready-made excavation buckets from China.
