Career coach John Fitzgerald offers a radical approach to career planning and life after losing a job in 'Rising from Redundancy' (RTE 1, Sunday, 9.30pm).

What's On the Box this week?

'Rising From Redundancy' (RTE 1, Sunday, 9.30pm) - Thousands of people in Ireland are trying to cope with life after redundancy. But what seems to be missing from all of the doom and gloom are any solutions for a new way forward. Last August, six unemployed people decided to take a different path and sign up to a six-month project which they hope will find them new jobs, new careers and, ultimately, new lives. They've been working with career coach John Fitzgerald who offers a radical approach to life after redundancy. From Barney, who spent over 30 years as a fitter and was made redundant from SR Technics last year, to Polish national Patricia who came to Ireland in the boom years and now can't find a job. From entrepreneur Noel, who ran his own business and now could face losing his house, to James, who spent years in sales and marketing and just doesn't know what to do next. And then there's Breid, who's the wrong side of 50 and hasn't had one reply to the hundreds of CVs she's posted out. All of the participants are desperate for work and change. But Fitzgerald's process isn't a quick fix and, for some of them, it proves an emotional rollercoaster. Change is never easy and, over the course of the six months, they realise they have to delve deep into themselves to discover what they really want out of life. _____________________________________________________________ 'The Brendan Voyage' (RTE 1, Sunday, 11am) - St Brendan is one of the most famous Irish saints and scholars, who kept alive the flame of Christian civilisation during the Dark Ages. Founder of the sixth century monasteries of Ardfert in Kerry and Clonfert in Galway, he is much better known as 'The Navigator', having, according to legend, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in his bid to take the Gospel to the ends of the Earth. In 1976, the English explorer Tim Severin decided to put that legend to the test by replicating Brendan's mythical voyage. He built a boat out of wood and oxhides, sealed with animal fat, and set out across the Atlantic, sent on his way by none other than the then Bishop of Kerry, Eamon Casey. Tim Severin's 1978 film 'The Brendan Voyage', which documented his team's remarkable feat, was an RTE broadcasting landmark, shown all over the world. Their tiny boat faced tempestuous seas and, at one stage, was holed below the waterline by an iceberg, forcing the crew to brave the icy waters to sew on a patch. On their arrival in Newfoundland, they were met as much with incredulity as acclaim. _____________________________________________________________ 'Worried About The Boy' (BBC 2, Sunday, 9pm) - 'Worried About The Boy' tells the story of a young Boy George who dreams of living a life filled with originality and passion, and of becoming a star in the 1980s fashion and pop music scene. Growing up as a teenager, George O'Dowd realises he is not like other boys his own age. He is sharp-witted, independent-minded and has a passion for clothes and make-up. Leaving the London suburbs for the city, he soon becomes a fixture at the infamous Blitz Club - the favourite haunt of those at the forefront of the New Romantic movement. Nightclub pioneer and Visage frontman Steve Strange offers George a job as cloakroom attendant at the Blitz. There, he meets Kirk, lead singer of Theatre Of Hate, and George's first true love, who inspires him to write his own music. George approaches music impresario Malcolm McLaren, who agrees to give him the chance to be part of a band. Set at the heart of the changing music scene in the '80s, 'Worried About The Boy' is as much about Boy George's emotional development and constant search for love as it is about his ambition and career. The drama reflects on an iconic and influential star and the cultural era with which he is synonymous. _____________________________________________________________ 'Wormwood Scrubs' (ITV, Monday, 9pm) - A candid look at life behind the locked doors of one of Europe's largest prisons. With unprecedented access to the London jail, this two-part documentary follows the frenetic lives of prisoners and prison officers who make up this complex, noisy and disturbed community and includes powerful accounts from them on the emotional turmoil, frustration and anger inside. Wormwood Scrubs prison holds up to 1,280 male inmates, from drug-addicted petty villains to sophisticated thieves and extremely violent, often disturbed, criminals. Some wings can hold over 300 prisoners, many of whom are drug addicts and, with only 12 guards to keep order, bullying and violence can be a daily occurrence. Up to 80 per cent of the inmates have drug issues and many have mental health problems. Prison governor Phil Taylor says life in the prison can be like a "smouldering or erupting volcano", as tensions rise amongst the prisoners. ______________________________________________________________ Movie Of The Week: 'Almost Famous' (RTE 2, Saturday, 1.20am) - Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup star in Cameron Crowe's autobiographical tale of a 15-year-old avid rock fan who lands an assignment from Rolling Stone magazine to accompany a fledgling band from Michigan called Stillwater on their first tour.
