Killer Malcolm McArthur set free

One of Ireland's most notorious murderers, Malcolm McArthur, has been released from prison this week after serving 30 years behind bars. McArthur, who grew up at Breemount, Trim, was jailed for life in 1982 for the brutal murder of young nurse Bridie Gargan in Dublin's Phoenix Park. The 27 year-old nurse, from The Riggins, Dunshaughlin, was beaten to death by McArthur while she sunbathed in the park. He was also charged with killing Offaly farmer Donal Dunne but the case never went to trial. The killer was released from Shelton Abbey open prison in Co Wicklow on Monday after Justice Minister Alan Shatter agreed to his permanent release.
