What"s on the bx this week?

'Consuming Passions" (RTE 1, Wednesday) - Keith Sheekey is a 22 year-old from Ballymun and is a self-taught champion hip-hop/breakdancer. He and his crew are on their way to Las Vegas for the world breakdancing championship. Keith shares his love for this demanding, exhilarating activity that requires him to be in tip-top shape to compete. John Rownan, in his early 20s, is hooked on tango. His world revolves around tango dancing, tango singing, listening to tango music, teaching tango classes and travelling to Argentina, the home of tango, to dance the night away. Phyllis and Joseph McCann, in their 70s, take part in ballroom dancing as many nights of the week as they possibly can. Phyllis has been dancing all her life, but Joseph didn"t take it up until he was 50, and soon afterwards the couple danced their way through the American ballroom dance competition circuit, picking up medals along the way. Twenty-five years later, as fit as anyone a quarter their age, they mesmerise with their poise, elegance and style. 'Alan Carr: Tooth Fairy Live" (CH4, Wednesday) - Alan Carr, award-winning comedian and co-host of Channel 4"s 'The Sunday Night Project", recorded this live show at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2007 to a sell-out audience. 'Tooth Fairy Live" went on to sell over 500,000 copies and remained at number one in the comedy DVD chart for a record-breaking 12 weeks. In the show, Alan talks about childhood and adolescence in his trademark frank and hilarious style. Being born into a family that focused heavily upon sport, growing up was tough for Alan. His father was the manager of Northampton Town football team and passionately wanted him to become a professional footballer. Alan had very different aspirations, however, none of which included sporting achievement. 'Don"t Die Young" (BBC 2, Thursday) - Doctor and anatomist Alice Roberts explores the bones, muscles and joints, which account for more than half of all reported pain, as she continues her tour of the human body in this friendly and informative guide to healthy living. Dr Alice meets Dawn Connor, a young mum recently back at work as a nurse in Bristol. Pregnancy, childbirth and her job have all placed a strain on her back. With Alice as a guide, Dawn discovers that a combination of exercise and good diet will benefit her now and also help protect her toddler, Rosie, from back problems in later life. Using her trademark dissection of animal parts, Dr Alice demonstrates that our bones, as well as our muscles, can change shape if we change the way we use them. She also shows us what a 'slipped disc" actually looks like and what happens to a joint when it"s damaged by osteoarthritis - a condition estimated to affect eight million people in the UK. She is also an experienced advisor to archaeologists and has an astonishing collection of bones that bear out the stresses and strains to which the human body has always been prone. When she meets Stuart Sharp, an amateur pilot who"s about to have a pioneering hip-resurfacing operation to help his arthritic hip, she"s able to show him a hip bone with osteoarthritis belonging to an ancient Roman. 'Loveland" (Sky One) - An old legend returns as legendary showbiz entertainer, Cilla Black, is returning to TV for a new 21st century dating show, 'Loveland", in which Cilla will revolutionise the dating show format she championed by combining real-time animation within a studio-based show. 'Loveland captivated me with its modern-day twist on the dating format, bringing something new and exciting to the genre,' she said. 'Its unique animation may help couples find love and me the perfect hat.' The new technology enables contestants to 'hide" behind computer-generated animated characters as they date each other. The audience can watch the animations live as they interact with the real contestants. The show concludes with the contestant picking which animated character they prefer - they then meet the person they have chosen to date for real. It is scheduled to air on Sky One next year. The date will also have a 21st century twist which will force the couples to really assess whether their relationships can survive in the real world. Still the same old Cilla, though…. Movie Of The Week: 'Gone In 60 Seconds" (RTE 1, Wednesday) - Nicolas Cage, Giovanni Ribisi, Angelina Jolie, Vinnie Jones and Robert Duvall co-star in this testosterone-fuelled epic dedicated to petrolheads everywhere. A remake of the old classic, one man has to steal a big number of serious vehicles to stay the right side of the Mob. It"s perfect for Cage, and for anyone with even the slightest liking for heavy auto metal, it"ll be a night well spent. Plan an evening out with your pals, girls.
