Historic Bellewstown pub destroyed in early morning fire

The historic Cosy Bar in Bellewstown was gutted in a fire which swept through the building in the early hours of Thursday morning last. Nobody was injured in the blaze which was eventually extinguished by fire-fighters from Navan, Drogheda and Balbriggan after several hours battling to bring the blaze under control. Fire-fighters took over four hours to quell the flames which destroyed the historic 18th century building. There was nobody on the premises at the time and a passer-by spotted the blaze and raised the alarm at around 2.15am. There had been renovation works taking place at the premises, which was formerly owned by the Tallon family. The bar, which is beside the church in Bellewstown, was a well-loved local spot and was also extremely popular with punters attending the annual Bellewstown races. The cause of the outbreak has yet to be established but it is believed it may have been due to an electrical fault.
