New Toyota Prius clocks up economy record

Toyota has shocked the motoring world by announcing its new Prius officially averages 2.64 litres/100km (107mpg) - an all-time high for new cars. The new model, which goes on sale in some markets in May, has just been certified in Japan with the dramatic fuel consumption figure. The hybrid petrol-electric car emits just 61g/km of CO2, thanks to the many innovations of its new 1.8 litre engine system. The emissions figure is way below any other new car on sale, including the tiny Smart ForTwo diesel, and Honda"s new Insight hybrid. European consumption figures are still to be confirmed, but if they"re as eye-opening as this, the competition is in for a heck of a challenge.
