The hunt for perspex goes on as builders providers step in to make sure schools get fully kitted out

Schools across Meath have been very busy over the last couple of weeks preparing for reopening and putting in place social distancing measures.

Significant layout changes are being made in both primary and post primary schools, perspex screens are being used in many schools and lots of additional hand washing facilities and hand sanitizing stations are being put in place.

Schools also seem to be putting an emphasis on ventilation and also on planning one way routes around schools to maintain distance. Some schools have been converting assembly halls or libraries into additional classrooms to facilitate social distancing and signs are being put up in schools across the country,

All this work has seen building providers and hire companies around the county being inundated with enquiries.

Chadwicks general manager Ollie Smyth said they have been very busy supplying to schools with perspex in high demand.

"Sourcing perspex has been a challenge, not just with the return to schools but throughout the Covid-19 crisis as businesses need it to protect staff and customers.

“There is a lot of work going on at schools in the area and there has been a huge demand for materials.

“They are buying materials to break up areas within the schools and to mark out walkways and playgrounds.

“We have had a lot of orders and are expecting more because there is a lot of work to be done in schools over the next week or so,” he said.

Social distancing remains a top priority for schools with many looking to provide additional canteen and toilet facilities.

Navan Hire has found things very busy with enquiries from schools, many of whom are looking to hire portacabins and portaloos to provide more space.

“All the schools have been ringing round, making enquiries. They are also looking for signs and ways of sectioning off areas of classrooms and playgrounds.

“It is a very busy time and there seems to be a lot if work to be done,” said a spokesperson.
