Meath heritage seminar in Trim

Meath County Council Library Service (Local Studies Department) and Meath Heritage Office are running a one-day heritage seminar titled 'Meath: Landscape and People" in Trim Castle Hotel on Saturday 11th July. The three presentations in the morning and the three case studies in the afternoon promise a very interesting day. Kevin Brady of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland will open proceedings with 'Mapping Meath with the Ordnance Survey" (1837-2009), in which he will provide an overview of the technology the Ordnance Survey of Ireland has employed to map the country and the advances in making that mapping available to a growing audience. Professor Patrick J Duffy, who lectures in cultural and historical geography at NUI Maynooth, will speak on 'Heritage and History: Exploring landscape and place in Meath". He is author of 'Landscapes of south Ulster: a parish atlas of the diocese of Clogher" in 1993, and editor of 'To and from Ireland: planned migration schemes 1600-2000" in 2004. The morning sessions will be concluded by Kevin V Mulligan, whose presentation is titled 'The County Houses and Demesne Landscapes of Meath". Mr Mulligan"s 1993 publication 'Buildings of Meath: a selection of protected structures" has become an invaluable reference work for anybody interested in the built heritage of the county. The case studies scheduled for the afternoon are intended to allow speakers to delve in greater detail into their own areas of interest. Dr Liam McNiffe, principal of St Patrick"s College, Cavan, will present his work on 'Williamstown House & Townland", tracing settlement in the area from early Christian times. The second case study focuses on 'Meath Industrial Heritage Survey - Research and Findings" by Steven McGlade, consultant with Archaeological Technology Ltd, and the seminar concludes with an overview and update from John McCullen, author, historian and farmer, on the Meath Fieldnames Survey. Places are limited, so early booking is essential. Phone Meath County Council Library on (046) 902 1134 or email tfrench@meathcoco.ie or ftallon@meathcoco.ie
