Referendum called for on 'Meath reunification'

One of the oddest submissions made to Westmeath County Council on the draft Westmeath County Development Plan is one calling for the reunification of Meath and Westmeath.

The submission – which is apparently (one might hope!) tongue in cheek – came in the name of the "Meath Reunification 2021 Campaign".

The report of the council’s chief executive, Pat Gallagher, on submissions on the draft County Development Plan is under consideration by councillors at three separate meetings this week, the first of which was held this week, Monday in Athlone.

Mr Gallagher, does not address the request for reunification in his report on the submissions.

The submission from the Meath Reunification 2021 Campaign sets out the case for the merger with the statements:

“For too long our great county’s reputation has been tarnished by the likes of Niall Horan and Michael O’Leary.

"For too long our GAA has suffered.

"Enough is enough. It is time to admit defeat and once again reunite with our eastern brethren.

"Together, we will free ourselves from Anglo-Norman division and return Meath to its former glory, Big Meath. An Mhí Mhór Abú."

The submission concludes by calling for a public referendum on the reunification of Meath, declaring: "it’s time to put it to the people".

Could he be on to something here?
