Slane’s winter windowland

Slane has been transformed into a 'Winter Wonderland' thanks to the efforts of Slane Community Forum and Slane Tidy Towns.

The groups have come together this Christmas to help bring some festive cheer to the village.

While carols in the traditional sense are not possible this year, the groups commissioned artist Ciarán Dunleavy who has created scenes from Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' in the windows of Slane's vacant shop units.

"Last Christmas we organised a free Santa event in the village which was a real hit", explained Michele Power, Chair of Slane Community Forum.

"We knew with Covid restrictions it wasn't possible to do this again but still wanted to do something special for the village that would give people a lift after what has been a tough year for all. We had often spoken with Tidy Towns about the possibility of using the windows of the vacant units in Slane to enhance the village. We revisited this idea and decided to make it happen".

Dermot Maguire, Chair of Slane Tidy Towns, continued: “We were very fortunate that the property owners were amenable to us using their window frontage and would like to thank them for facilitating us.

“Back in 2017 we commissioned artist Ciarán Dunleavy to paint a mural of Francis Ledwidge in our village garden.

“The mural is a much-loved addition to the village street scape and we knew that Ciarán was the right man for this project. We are absolutely delighted with the results".
